Ipswich Tidal Barrier Control Centre

JMS Engineers proudly designed the striking control centre for the Ipswich Tidal Barrier, part of a £72m flood defence system protecting over 1,500 homes and 400 businesses from tidal surges. While the barrier itself employs gates, hydraulic rams, and cylinders, the control centre ensures its seamless operation and serves as a prominent architectural statement.

The brief

Flood defence control centre

JMS Engineers proudly designed the striking control centre for the Ipswich Tidal Barrier, part of a £72m flood defence system protecting over 1,500 homes and 400 businesses from tidal surges. While the barrier itself employs gates, hydraulic rams, and cylinders, the control centre ensures its seamless operation and serves as a prominent architectural statement.

Engineering response

Cantilevered architectural form

We used advanced 3D modelling to design and fix cantilevered beams, creating the centre’s unique overhanging “twist” on the upper levels. This innovative approach ensured structural integrity while achieving the architectural vision.

Delivery detail

Resilient flood structure

Designed to withstand severe flooding, the control centre features reinforced concrete and steel framing. Its resilient structure ensures uninterrupted operation during extreme tidal events, safeguarding Ipswich’s vital infrastructure.

Outcome

Operational landmark

The control centre’s dramatic combination of steel, concrete, and glass captures attention while housing critical observation and control rooms. Its elevated design provides panoramic views of the barrier and its surroundings, making it a visual and operational focal point.
